Lisa Gross’ work Exodus celebrates the series of deliverances that have affected the freedom and reunification of the Jewish People. Utilizing dozens of spathes from the indigenous palm tree, whose form and function suggests protection, this hanging installation conjures the Parting of the Red Sea, a watershed moment in both Jewish and universal history.
Exodus picks up the dramatic event of this divine intervention which has molded Israel’s relationship with its god. It focuses on the very moment of the wonder, and provides a metaphor for the modern-day deliverance of Jewish communities from around the globe.
